Linked Production: (60 sec ad) Research and Planning

1) Confirm your production brief. You write this yourself but it's absolutely crucial this is clear, appropriate and achievable. You should have done this already - the original blogpost was here - but it may have changed as a result of your preliminary exercise.
To create a mental health awareness advert that highlights the importance of talking to people about the problems you or someone you know may have experienced.

2) Research: detailed notes on at least THREE texts similar to what you are creating. What are the key conventions? What can you learn/borrow from the examples you have looked at?

Time to change
This advert is similar to my idea, as it is also a mental health advert that discusses how those with mental health issues are treated unfairly. The POV shots throughout the clip, allow the audience to identify with the person who is being faced with discrimination. The switch between different scenarios e.g a coffee shop or an office, allows the audience to recognize that this sort of discrimination can happen anywhere. The clip also includes various voiceover that accompany each of the scenes, and explain the situation the victim has faced. For example one of the scenes show a woman looking at the camera in disappointment, while the voiceover says "Your father and I feel down now and again, but you never see us wallowing in it". This scene suggests that the issue of mental health is not being taken seriously. In the end, we hear a voiceover explaining that for some victims of discrimination, it is "too much to bear", which ultimately hints at the idea of suicide. In the clip at this point we see the victim walking into a dark tunnel, which symbolizes "the end". In my production, I would definitely like to have an ending that is memorable as it will help the audience understand the meaning behind it. I also want to include different scenarios, like it did in this ad to show how the victim has been treated or what they have experienced. In terms of the camera movements I think it will be quite hard to recreate the POV shots of the mental health victims, like they did in this advert, but it might mean that I would have to use a steadi-cam or tripod to recreate it.

Minding Your Head
This advert is also quite similar to my idea, as it mentions the need to talk to someone if you believe that you could be suffering from mental health. It also highlights some of the consequences that the person could face if they dont e.g losing your job, damaging your relationship with your family and friends. This links to my production as I also mention how mental health issues can affect the relationships of those close to you. These scenes will help the audience understand that this is a common problem and that talking about it early can help mend those relationship or make them stronger. The tones used in this advert are also quite effective in setting the mood, as blue connotes "sadness"and "loneliness" which are both related to depression and mental health. I think that this plays an important part in mental health adverts as it helps the audience understand the emotions that people with mental health issues, go through. In my production I am definitely going to use colours/ filters to create a certain mood that highlights the emotions that one might feel during various experiences. I also want to incorporate some of the intense sound effects that were used in this advert, to show the seriousness of the issue and add to the dramatic feeling of the overall advert. During the last scene where I reveal that the mental health victim has been talking to a teddy bear all along, I would like to have a soundtrack that is quiet eerie and shocking as I want the audience to feel quite freaked out- adding to the idea of how mental health victims sometimes behave in a strange way and how that is perceived and dealt with by those around them.

Lets Call Bulls#!t PSA
This advert in particular is also quite similar to my idea as it tackles "youth mental health", which is an increasingly controversial issue especially in today's society. For my advert, I was going to target a rather young demographic also as I believe youth mental health is a serious issue and can have severe consequences later on in life if it is not addressed in one way or another. In today's society, social media has put a significant amount of pressure on teens to act and look a certain way. Most statistics in fact claim that sufferers of mental health and depression are often quite young. My critical investigation also looked at the show "13 Reasons Why" which is a teen drama that explores the effect of mental health and suicide. The scene shows a group of teenagers holding signs that explain how they have been treated e.g "cuts himself called a freak" or "feels hopeless, told her problem isn't real". In my production I would like to explore similar issues that teens face, especially in school. This advert is also quite similar ot the previous one I mentioned as it uses color effects to create a dramatic mood. The advert also uses a smooth tracking shot which I plan to recreate in my production as there is a scene where I move the camera from the character's face to reveal a hidden object. I think that the fact that there is no voiceover for this particular advert, is actually quite effective as it allows the audience to fully concentrate on the powerful imagery- literally incriminating those with mental health issues - and therefore get the full impact of the ad. For my production, nearly all of the scenes will have no voiceover, as I would like the audience to intepret the messages for themselves.

3) Project schedule: when will you shoot and edit this production? Make this a week-by-week schedule leading up to Easter. Key dates: we break up for Easter on Friday 31 March and the final deadline is Wednesday 18 April.
12th March- 16th- Shoot school scenes and edit
17th- 23th- shoot playground scenes and edit
24th- 31st shoot home/solo scenes and edit
During Easter holiday- Might film abroad depending on holiday plans
After easter- do re-shoots and edit- final touches

4) Script - see the BBC Writers' Room for advice/script formatting. If you're making a music video, you'll want to write a treatment instead. This is an example treatment that I provide for GCSE Media students studying this topic. For print productions, this means writing all the text for the cover, contents and feature articles. Write this in Microsoft Word so you can proofread and spellcheck the work before moving it into Photoshop.

5) Sketching and drafting - for video-based productions this means astoryboard - sheets available in DF07 or you can print out your own AQA storyboard sheet. For print productions, this means detailed sketches of all your pages.

6) Shot list - use Microsoft Word or a template like this to help you. Remember, you need a shot list whether you are filming or carrying out a print photoshoot - professional quality original images are essential if you want to reach the top level.
7) Mise-en-scene: casting/model details, costume and make-up, props, lighting, location scouting for video productions etc. Use photographs to document and plan your mise-en-scene - using your phone is acceptable for this.
