1) Madness power and the media
pg 168 "perfect body shape"- damaging to women's physical and psychological well being
The extract talked about the representation of women in magazines and the "perfect body shape" (examples given were Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan). Explored the way in which nowadays journalists are sensitive to the subject of mental health and pursue an "anti-stigma agenda"

pg 109 Channelling Affliction- "Some dramas depict how medical authorities and institutions sometimes fail to exercise their duty of care..."

pg 34 "the media's role in the stigmatisation of mental distress has become a central concern among media watchdogs and campaigners in Britain and the US."

"has been a remarkable profilioration of discourse in the UK and the US aimed at reducing the stigmatization of mental distress."

2) Media and mental distress
pg 18 " negative images of mental health and illness  pervade our media, yet it is too simplistic to assume that this is due merely to badly informed or unsympathetic programme-makers."

the/depiction/s of mental health (in 13 reasons why) is devoid of "...any social responsibility to present more balanced or accurate representations of mental ill health..." pg 18

pg 31 (producers) "committed to presenting more...sympathetic images of mental ill health" but this can be overruled by "organisational pressures"
